Popis: | Studies conducted in recent years ranked chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in third place as the leading cause of death worldwide. COPD exacerbations are important events in the management of this pathology, as these have a negative impact on the quality of life, the rate of hospitalization and remission, but also on the progression of the disease. One of the factors that have been targeted as being involved in the occurrence of COPD exacerbations is vitamin D. This is a liposoluble secosteroid vitamin with a number of biological effects that cause various pathologies to occur. Vitamin D deficiency has been associated with increased rates of exacerbations and hospitalization in COPD patients. Recent meta-analyzes have concluded that vitamin D deficiency is directly associated with the severity of COPD and vitamin D supplementation may prevent exacerbations. It is assumed that this association is mediated by the immunomodulatory effects of vitamin D. Obtaining optimal vitamin D status may not only help prevent comorbidities, but also prevent exacerbations, which have been shown to be at higher risk of mortality |
