The quadrupole moment of 26Mg as a test of shell-model interactions

Popis: The static quadrupole moment Q 2 1 + , and the B (E2; 0 1 + → 2 + 1 ) value of the first excited state of 26 Mg have been measured using the reorientation effect in Coulomb excitation of 26 Mg projectiles. It is found that Q 2 1 + = −13.6±3.0 (−9.5±3.0) e ·fm 2 and B (E2; 0 + 1 → 2 + 1 ) = 322±16 (328±16) e 2 ·fm 4 for constructive (destructive) interference from higher states. The result for Q 2 clearly differentiates among several alternative effective interactions which have been used in shell-model calculations.
