Popis: | The thesis herein offered is that when inappropriate in kind or amount, the adaptive reactions evoked in an individual in response to threat can result in impairment of organ function and in some instances to tissue damage. Evidence will be cited to show that the functional capacity of the brain also may be restricted following prolonged unsuccessful attempts at adaptation. A further elaboration of the thesis is that the reduction in overall adaptive capacity stemming from this impaired functioning of the brain is relevant to serious disturbance of mood, thought, and behavior, including the clinical syndrome of schizophrenia. |
