Popis: Feeding solid oxide fuel cells with biogas for distributed combined heat and power generation could be an attractive alternative to combustion technologies. However, biogas contains sulfur-based compounds that are detrimental for fuel cells. This work has been conducted in the framework of the European Project Waste2Watts which aims to design and test a flexible and low-cost cleaning unit for deep contaminants removal for biogas utilization in high-efficiency fuel cell systems. The focus is on small-medium size farms, for which a suitable techno-economic solution is the deep cleaning of biogas through adsorption materials to avoid intensive gas processing treatments. The hydrogen sulfide removal capacity of commercial and innovative adsorbent materials (activated carbons, metal oxides and metal hydroxides) has been tested under different biogas compositions (oxygen and humidity) that could affect the removal capacity of the sorbent materials. Metal oxide sorbents show the highest removal capacity if placed in contact with a dry and anaerobic gas mixture, while the performance of activated carbons is highly enhanced by chemisorption processes involved in presence of oxygen and humidity.
