The reintroduction of the body wave magnitude mB based on broadband records (i.e., records in a wide frequency range) of the first arriving seismic P-waves into international seismological practice could result in better quick estimation of the size of large earthquakes. This recommendation, made by the Working Group for Magnitude Measurements of the International Association of Seismology and Physics of the Earth's Interior (IASPEI), was adopted—along with other recommendations related to future standards of magnitude measurements—by the IASPEI Commission on Seismic Observation and Interpretation at the IASPEI General Assembly in Chile, 2–8 October 2005. |
