Irrigated agriculture in Pakistan was once dependent upon surface water although the large contiguous Indus Basin Irrigation System (IBIS) is now heavily dependent on groundwater resources. The number of private tubewells in the country, particularly in the province of Punjab grew exponentially over the last two decades. The overall objective of this study was to investigate the present groundwater issues and water use patterns and their impact on farmers’ income in the Punjab province of Pakistan. Results of the study revealed that informal groundwater markets were better developed in the mixed-wheat zone as compared to rice-wheat zone. Water productivity of the water-buyer was slightly lower than pump-owner suggesting that pump-owners over-irrigate their fields as compared to water buyers. Farmers reported three major problems associated with groundwater irrigation; high diesel cost, difficulty in getting new electricity connections and falling water tables. |
