Popis: | This paper reports a study of various aspects of behavior of persons in a wide range of age groups. Principal emphasis is placed on behavior that is indicative of the social roles played as a function of age. The subjects include an age range from 20 to 99 years. They were interviewed as part of a household survey of the city of Riverside, California. The survey design (described in more detail below) was a stratified random sample giving appropriate representation of ethnic groups, and of socio-economic status as indicated by housing levels. The total sample represents a cross-section of the population of the community, a city of approximately 85 000 population. The first part of the report describes the methods used in collecting the data and the ethnic, economic, and certain other characteristics of the population and is followed by the chief findings. On the basis of this study, it appears that the level of social activity in which aging members of a population engage is an inverse function of the physical activity required for such activities. Thus, the degree of “disengagement” appears to reflect altered physiological capacities rather than primarily psychological-social vectors that change with age. |
