Popis: | The 24-h pattern of the plasma PRL concentration was studied in eight male rhesus monkeys. The animals were prepared with chronic right-atrial catheters and electroencephalogram (EEG) electrodes in order to allow frequent blood sampling (every 15 min) and EEG-recordings (together with constant television observation) from an adjacent room for 24 h or various shorter time periods. Hormonal, activity, and EEG profiles were obtained during undisturbed conditions and during nap, sleep, or specific (noise-induced) sleep stage deprivation experiments. During undisturbed conditions, plasma PRL showed two diurnal peaks (0845 and 1630 h) and a nocturnal increase that coincided with the range of sleep onset times. The 24-h maximum was attained at 2230 h. Then PRL slowly decreased during the rest of the night. Nighttime mean PRL was significantly higher than daytime PRL (4.8 ± 0.7 vs. 3.4 ± 0.4 ngeq/ml). During daytime there was a significant positive correlation of PRL to activity/arousal. During the night, the PRL... |
