Popis: Joint ventures (JVs) –i.e. independent organizational entities that represent pooled resources and shared equity of two or more firms– have been at the forefront of academic research for the past three decades. Whereas early JV research has provided deep insight into the formation stage and the break-up of JVs, recent research points to two key areas where JV research has so far advanced to a lesser degree. First, our understanding remains limited regarding the performance effect and boundary conditions of post-formation changes (such as partner change) in JVs. Second, recent research has urged further advancements in understanding the individuals involved as decision-makers on the micro-level of JVs. In this dissertation, we aim to advance our understanding in these two core research areas, and we do so through three empirical projects that build on unique data on wind farm JVs.In chapter 2, we examine post-formation partner change, and argue that its performance effect is dependent on specific JV characteristics linked to strategic flexibility (i.e. technological complexity and equity concentration). In chapter 3, we shed light on human capital in JVs, and argue that resource dependence and monitoring needs that arise during collaboration determine the human capital value of JVs. Finally, in chapter 4, we emphasize that faultlines among JVs’ directors (i.e. hypothetical lines that emerge due to overlapping gender and age subgroups) can have so far unexplored, positive effects. Together, the findings of our studies offer new insights about post-formation dynamics in JVs and the individuals involved on JVs’ micro-level.
