| Popis: | Summary (1) Benemid (p-(di-n-propyl-sulphamyl) benzoic acid) may be given with sodium para-aminosalicylate (PAS) in the treatment of tuberculosis. 12 patients were so treated. The combination yields a higher level in the serum — PAS, prolonging the time during which a clinically effective level of PAS is present. (2) These effects are improved if Benemid is given before the PAS, rather than simultaneously. (3) Doses of PAS which are lower than those formerly given may therefore yield effective blood levels, provided Benemid is also given. (4) The effect of Benemid is not lessened after administration for two months. (5) In the 12 patients studied, the degree of improvement, as judged by the usual clinical and radiological methods of examination, seemed to be about the same as when larger doses of PAS were given. (6) No toxic effects due to Benemid were noted. |
