Popis: | The role of serial maternal urinary estriol assays in the assessment of the intrauterine problem of chronic fetal insufficiency has been studied. Low maternal urinary estriol patterns have been graded on the basis of the relationship of all estimations of each series of estriol assays to the mean level for the relevant gestational age. Seventy per cent of newborn infants below the fifteenth percentile by weight for gestational age were associated with low estriol patterns. Sixty per cent of obstetric patients studied with low estriol patterns delivered low birth weight infants, while several of the exceptions suggested transient episodes of chronic fetal insufficiency. There is evidence of a correlation between the severity of the low maternal urinary estriol excretion pattern and the degree of low birth weight of the newborn infant. |
