Objectives Early adulthood is a complex period of life wherein meeting ones well defined goals is very important. Social competition leads a young person to try to be a perfectionist and fear of failure results in hopelessness. As the majority of the population of Iran is young, assessment of the rate of hopelessness in this population could be important. Materials and methods This cross sectional descriptive analytical study included 400 residents of Yazd city in the 18 – 30 years age group. Besides a questionnaire for demographic data, Beck hopelessness inventory test was also used. Sampling was done through random clustering method and data was analyzed with SPSS software, version 11. Results Of the total, 39.5% of individuals had mild, 19.25% had moderate and 3.25% had severe hopelessness. The status of hopelessness was statistically correlated with drug and alcohol abuse, parental support, relation with parents, problem with children, bad friends, educational status, age and the gap between reality and idealistic thinking. The rate of hopelessness was more significant in the 24-30 years age group Conclusion Considering the fact that hopelessness rate is high in the 24-30 years age group and inadequate jobs and income are the main obstacles for marriage, economic and moral support for the young could be very important factors in decreasing the rate of hopelessness in young. |
