Popis: | Bywaters, Dixon and Scott (1963) have recently emphasised the presence of joint lesions in hyperparathyroidism. They comment that it is not widely recognised that primary bone lesions may lead to joint disease although the converse situation is well understood. In this patient calcification of all four meniscal cartilages in the knees was responsible for the diagnosis of metabolic bone disease and it was a simple matter to establish a diagnosis of primary hyperparathyroidism on further radiological and biochemical grounds. Mrs. L. M., aged 50 years, complained of swelling and pain in the knees for one year together with a history of weakness and depression. Symptoms of heartburn, polydipsia and polyuria were also elicited later on direct questioning. Radiography of the knees was undertaken following the establishment clinically of bilateral knee joint effusions. Pseudo clubbing of the fingers was the only other clinical sign of note.
