Popis: | Bacillus subtilis, the model strain of Gram-positive bacteria, is under continuous domestication to competitively perform at the industrial level. In the last decades the outputs of fundamental research on this bacterium have generated huge data that helped engineers in building approaches to tinker robust and efficient cells. The recorded progress in fine-tuning protein expression and the successful design of customized heterologous metabolic pathways have opened doors to plenty of opportunities in white biotechnology. In this chapter, we shed light on the high potential of B. subtilis as a cell factory for protein and high added value compound production, and we highlight recent advances in engineering Bacillus-based chassis. The topic is treated from a synthetic biologist point of view more oriented toward the design of new strategies and tools to build the future workhorse strains. |
