Popis: | Acute toxicity of Calotropis procera was studied in Desert sheep and Nubian goats given single or multiple doses (6-0·001 ml per kg) of the latex of the plant by oral, intravenous, intraperitoneal or subcutaneous routes. Administration of the latex of C. procera by all routes caused deaths in both species. The animals developed nervous signs, urination, tachycardia, dyspnoea and loss of condition. Severe pathological changes were seen in the liver, kidneys, heart, lungs, brain and intestines. These were correlated with changes in the concentration of total protein, ammonia, bilirubin, sodium, potassium, calcium and creatinine in the serum. The concentrations of total lipids in the liver, heart and kidneys were raised. The increase in RBC, PCV and Hb was probably due to haemoconcentration. |
