Popis: | The demonstration of heart-reactive antibodies in the sera of patients with rheumatic fever has prompted consideration of the possible role of autoimmunity in the pathogenesis of rheumatic carditis. The non-toxicity of such sera for cultures of mammalian heart cells suggests that these antibodies do not have a primary pathogenetic role and are formed as part of an immunological response to heart tissue which has been damaged by some unrelated cardiotoxic agent. Possibly heart muscle which has been damaged by some specific cardiotoxin may then show enhanced susceptibility to autoimmune-type damage by the newly formed heart-reactive antibodies, leading to the onset of clinical carditis. It is proposed that the specific cardiotoxin in rheumatic fever may be streptocine A. |
