Popis: Over the last decade, the Bridger-Teton National Forest in Wyoming has experienced dramatic growth in the number of visitors coupled with funding cuts, resulting in severe environmental impacts. In response, the National Forest created the Ambassadors for Responsible Recreation program, deploying numerous volunteers around high-use areas to educate visitors and steward the land. This study explores the motivations of these volunteers, what they hope to gain through the program, and how they feel the program aligns with goals determined by the USDA Forest Service. Surveys and interviews revealed that the two most influential reasons people have for joining this program are to help the environment and to contribute to a positive visitor experience. Additionally, it was found that the volunteers are satisfied with their work and believe they help the USDA Forest Service carry out its mission. These results can help the Bridger-Teton National Forest continue to develop this program using best practices for recruiting, supporting, and retaining of volunteers working with outdoor and environmental organizations.
