For a growing country such as South Africa, the energy demand outweighs the energy supply, thisresults in frequent power cuts. Equipment such as refrigerators are affected. To preserve foodproducts during these power cuts Phase Change Material (PCM) material can be used. This paperpresents the study of three eutectic salt water solutions investigated, 𝐾𝐶𝑙, 𝑀𝑔𝐶𝑙2 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑁𝑎𝐶𝑙. Thesesalts were chosen because of the high latent heat and their relatively low price. From experiments,it was confirmed that 𝐾𝐶𝑙, 𝑀𝑔𝐶𝑙2 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑁𝑎𝐶𝑙 had a phase change temperature of -11°C, ± -7°C and-22°C. 𝐾𝐶𝑙 was seen as the ideal solution, however segregation will decrease performance in thelong run. 𝑁𝑎𝐶𝑙 is ideal since it offers a lower phase change temperature resulting in a greater heattransfer in the compartment. The refrigerator freezer might not be able to completely freeze the𝑁𝑎𝐶𝑙 solution. For 𝑀𝑔𝐶𝑙2, the concentration of 25% might be incorrect, the study concluded thatanother concentration ratio will have to be evaluated. |
