Popis: | The production rate of a batch, fed-batch or cyclic process can be increased, meanwhile providing a high product quality along with an excellent feed exhaustion, by partitioning of the process into two phases: a production and an exhaustion phase. The useful part of the exhaustion phase product is ‘recycled’ to the subsequent cycle. An advantage of this policy is that for the production phase as well as for the exhaustion phase, a suboptimal constant control of the feed, energy supply or product removal is close to dynamic optimal control. Additionally, the incorporation of a recycle creates at minimum one extra degree of freedom for optimisation. In this article it is discussed in which cases and to which extent this policy is advantageous. For batch processes, the exhaustion progresses during production, and a free optimum in the production rate is obtained. For fed-batch processes, however, the exhaustion realised at the end of the production phase should be as large as possible. Consequently, the production capacity will be determined by physical constraints. |
