Popis: This article presents a study carried out by a team of the organization Taller Ecologista (Ecologist Workshop), Rosario, Province of Santa Fe, Argentina, motivated by local citizen initiatives to resist the expansion of one of the most important agricultural-port infrastructures in Argentina, associated with the Paraguay-Parana rivers Waterway. In order to support these initiatives, we first assessed the state of the Lower Parana River ’s coastal and ravine environments, which are affected by the activities of cities, industries and ports located in the region. Recognizing the ecological and cultural value of these environments, we focused our study on identifying four main characteristics of the uses and practices that take place in the region: a) those that allow maintaining the ecological integrity of these fluvial environments, b) those that negatively affect their ecological integrity, c) those that enable the use of these environments for community and public activities, and d) those that restrict or altogether preclude public and community activities. The article concludes that the much needed and long-delayed processes of environmental management of this territory must include an eco-social approach to protect the region’s natural environment and the preservation of its life and cultures.
