In this paper, we present a model for airline pilots’ flare maneuvers. We introduce a generic flare model that combines two mathematical models for flare maneuvers, the circular arc model and the exponential flare model, and only depends on three parameters. To quantify those parameters, we use flight operation data (time series) from four single flights. This step requires the identification of the initiation and the end of the flare maneuver within the full time series. In this paper, we derive an algorithm for detecting the flare initiation. By identifying the flare initiation and the end of the flare maneuver, we can extract a relevant timeframe from the full time series and apply our model to the extracted data points. Then, we are able to quantify the flare parameters and obtain a model of airline pilots’ flare maneuvers as a result. Finally we extend our approach to a data set of 9204 flights in order to get more accurate statistical information on the flare maneuver. The results show that it is possible to identify and quantify the different types of flare maneuver of airline pilots. |
