The oxidation study of different α-hydroxy acids by benzimidazolium fluorochromate (BIFC) was done in dimethylsulphoxide (non-aqueous) medium, which results in the corresponding oxoacids formation. The reaction was found to be first order in relation to the BIFC and also exhibited Michaelies-Menten type of kinetics w. r. t. hydroxy acids. The acrylonitrile polymerization did not show effect on the reaction rate. The primary kinetic isotope effect has been showed by the oxidation of α-deuteriated mandelic acid, i.e. (kH/kD = 6.15 at 288 K). The hydrogen ions were used to catalysed the reaction. The form of hydrogen ion dependence was: kobs = a + b [H+]. The multiparametric equations of Kamlet’s and Swain’s have been used to analysed the solvent effect. Mechanism involving the transfer of hydride ion via chromate ester has been proposed. |
