Objective: To identify barriers and enablers for Aboriginal people and/or Torres Strait Islanders in Australia when applying, enrolling and/or completing a university degree. Introduction: Universities in Australia have a lower number of Aboriginal people and/or Torres Strait Islanders applying, enrolling, and completing degrees when compared to non-Aboriginal Australians. While some Aboriginal people and/or Torres Strait Islanders have intentions to study at a university, barriers exist that prevent this aspiration from becoming a reality. Identifying and overcoming these barriers may help more Aboriginal people and/or Torres Strait Islanders obtain their degree. It is equally important to recognise pathways that Australian universities have implemented that enable Aboriginal people and/or Torres Strait Islanders to start and finish their degree so these avenues can be encouraged. Through this review we hope to recognise barriers and enablers that can be explored to help support Aboriginal people and/or Torres Strait Islanders apply and complete a dental degree through The University of Sydney. Inclusion criteria: Participants from Australia who identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander will be eligible for inclusion in this review. Studies that discuss barriers and/or enablers in relation to Australian Aboriginal peoples when applying, enrolling and/or completing a university degree in Australia will be accepted in this scoping review. No age or language limitations will be applied. Methods: The following electronic databases will be searched for potentially eligible studies. MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, PubMed Informit: Indigenous Collection, AIATSIS: Indigenous Studies Bibliography via Informit online and ERIC: Educational Resources Information Center. This review will consider all types of published and unpublished literature with no search limitations applied. Two authors will independently screen studies for eligibility for inclusion. Study authors will be contacted to provide additional information as required |
