Popis: | In this article, we draw on the hitherto unstudied historical evidence provided by these registers, and other documents from the Santa Creu Hospital, to offer an overview of the basic features that characterized the cases of the insane admitted to the hospital between the late sixteenth and early eighteenth century, with occasional reference to the care they received. To avoid distorting historical reality through anachronistic interpretations, we shall first look at the wider historical and social context, defined by the development in later medieval and early modern Spain and Europe of specific measures to deal with poverty, known at the time as ‘poor relief’. |
