Popis: | Although primary-care physicians are increasingly expected to provide short-term psychological counselling services, few programs exist to teach residents the necessary skills. The Department of Family Practice and Community Health at the University of Minnesota Medical School has developed a 10-week course for this purpose. This program familiarizes residents with the structure and process of psychological counselling as it may be conducted in a physician's office. Initially, participants are given a schema for assessing the patient's current status and for planning intervention. Residents then review their own videotapes and practice skill building. Evaluation of the course has been highly favorable. In their unsolicited comments, participants prefer a problemoriented approach to a concept-oriented one. The findings from this course suggest the development of a two-stage program of counselling courses for undergraduate medical students and residents. |
