Popis: | The water budget reporting is a critical element of water management planning in Jordan as it provides an overview of the historical water supply and demand conditions and can inform water infrastructure investment and allocation decisions. Historically based on observations and estimations, absence of near-real time data and appropriate tools can hamper the development of an accurate water budget. This research evaluates the applicability of the water accounting plus (WA+) framework, developed by IHE Delft, IWMI and FAO to inform Jordan’s water budget reporting. The WA+ framework utilizes remote sensing derived data, applies it in a pixel-based soil water balance model (PixSWAB) and provides estimates of water availability and utilization rates in near real time. The high-resolution spatial data from the FAO Water Productivity Open-access portal (WaPOR) was used as input. The standardized WA+ sheets were adapted to the specific requirements for water budget reporting in Jordan, and specific indicators were calculated to provide insight into past water availability and use.The approach was implemented in the Amman-Zarqa basin from 2010 to 2021. Initial results indicate that WA+ provides improvements in the estimates of water use in irrigated agriculture, recharge rates, and total water storage, whereas information on inter-basin transfers, water use of domestic and industries still requires data or estimates from the ground. As the largest water user in Jordan, improving agricultural water consumption estimates, significantly improves water budget estimations and illustrates some of the major challenges facing Jordan.
