Popis: | Breaking of intestines during evisceration of broilers can cause faecal contamination and hence condemnation or reprocessing of the carcass. In this study, the effect of a mould inhibitor, based on a combination of organic acids and salts, on intestinal strength was determined. Broiler chickens were fed a commercial mash broiler feed, either treated with 5 kg liquid mould inhibitor per tonne, or untreated as a control. At 39 days of age, 25 cm segments of the intestines were collected and the breaking strength was measured on an Instron Universal Testing Machine. Three main observations were made in this study. First, there was no significant difference in breaking strength between the anterior and posterior parts of the intestine. Secondly, use of a mould inhibitor in broiler feeds improves intestinal strength, but this effect is not always statistically significant. And third, male broilers seem to respond better to the treatment than female broilers. |
