Spectroscopy of matrix-isolated carbon cluster molecules between 200 and 850 nm wavelength

Popis: The optical spectra of large carbon molecules are reported. The molecules were produced by diffusive coagulation of carbon vapor trapped in an Ar matrix. The observed absorptions are strong and apparently form a regular sequence. We interprete the features as transitions in carbon chain molecules. A tentative assignment of the bands to specific carbon clusters is given according to which the sequence of features originates from the species C4 up to C9.
