To the Editor: In arguing that their findings of a relationship between education and age-related cortical atrophy in a nondemented sample of elderly persons is consistent with the cerebral reserve hypothesis for developing AD or other dementia, Coffey and associates1 make several unfounded assumptions. First, they assume that their finding of increased peripheral CSF volume is a marker for dementia.
