Life story books are frequently used to support reminiscence therapy for people with dementia. A RCT and process evaluation were conducted to study the effectiveness and implementation of the Online Life Story Book. 42 participants were randomized in an intervention or waitlist control group. Neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS), quality of life (QOL) and caregiver burden (CB) were assessed three times. Eight cases were studied, involving a content analysis of the books as well as qualitative interviews with all stakeholders. No significant effects were found on NPS, QOL and CB. The books showed wide variety in number and content of memories. Stakeholders identified values for people with dementia, volunteers, informal and professional caregivers, and dementia care in general. They were predominantly positive, but also mentioned some obstacles for implementation. Although solid effects were absent, stakeholders identified added values that were not measured in the RCT and thereby provide avenues for further research. |
