Al-maqāmāt, which appeared in Arabic literature as a literary genre in the fourth century, were having the characteristics of preach and speech. In the course of time, however, they have started to appear as educational, instructive and entertaining texts. Ibn al-Wardī’s maqāma, al-Nabā ‘An al-Wabā, which is in the point of this article, appears to be have an educational and instructive characteristic. One of the most important aspect of the work, beside its literary aspect is that it was written in a time when the world facing one of the heaviest waves of pandemic, and that the work contains some important historical and cultural data about Islamic geography and society of this time, which were also under the threat of the pandemic. Ibn al-Wardī’s maqāma is translated into Turkish for the first time in this article and being subject to a content analysis. We will have the opportunity to see how the pandemic diseases left deep traces both in individuals’ psychology and in their society through the eyes of a Muslim scholar who lived in the fourteenth century and was died of the pandemic. |
