Popis: | Weight gain is physiologically natural and healthy during pregnancy to support growth and development of the fetus. Maternal obesity is related to a number of adverse outcomes for mother and infant, and the risk of the majority of such complications is amplified by excess gestational weight gain (GWG). Excessive weight gain in both normal weight and obese women may contribute to worsening of the obesity epidemic because of postpartum weight retention and long-term effects of the infants. Management of obesity in pregnancy includes recommendations of appropriate GWG and still remains controversial. The latest recommendations from the Institute of Medicine (IOM) are based on observational studies and are taking both maternal and fetal outcomes into consideration. The 2009 IOM guideline recommends a GWG of 5–9 kg in obese women. Lifestyle intervention in obese pregnant women has the potential to improve fetomaternal outcomes by limiting GWG, but there is a lack of evidence about the effect of such intervention. A short status of published intervention studies is listed in this chapter. |
