Popis: | The compound CuFeO2 (delafossite) undergoes an antiferromagnetic transition at ≈19°K. The spin directions are parallel to the threefold rhombohedral axis. It is suggested that the magnetic structure consists of ferromagnetic layers normal to this axis with the spin directions alternating from layer to layer. The internal magnetic field at the iron nucleus is (520 ± 5) kOe at 4.4°K. The isomer shift for Fe37 in CuFeO2 is (+0.40 ± 0.015) mm/sec relative to metallic iron (both at 300°K), which provides conclusive experimental confirmation that the iron is trivalent in delafossite. The measured quadrupole interaction, 1 4 e 2 qQ , is (+0.32 ± 0.015)mm/sec at 300°K, which agrees qualitatively with the result of a point charge calculation. |
