O NE OUTCOME of a descriptive study to validate a pediatric patient classification instrument was the establishment of a data base for support of management decisions related to allocation of nursing resources. More than 1,500 direct observations of nursing care activities were conducted in 1986. This study was replicated with 1,078 observations of direct nursing care activities in a second te~iary pediatric institution in 1987. An automated data collection program recorded direct, indirect, and unit-related activities during the implementation of 76 nursing activities defined as care indicators.
