Additive and non-additive gene actions were involved in controlling SPAD chlorophyll readings (SPAD) and kernel yield with a greater role of non additive gene actions. The positive and significant associations between SPAD chlorophyll readings and kernel yield were consistent suggesting that SPAD readings may be considered while making selections for higher yield in maize. The cross combinations with high per se performance, significant sca effects and standard heterosis in the desired direction involving good x poor or poor x good general combiners may be exploited in the development hybrids while cross combinations with mean non-significant sca effects and significant heterosis may be utilized in population improvement programme in maize.
