Popis: The Volta Grande do Xingu is a region of unique biodiversity and environmental wealth. Featuring a differentiated geomorphology with many intertwined channels, waterfalls and rapids, it was the area chosen for the Belo Monte Hydroelectric Power Plant. Now, this mega-enterprise threatens the viability of the Volta Grande do Xingu and the maintenance of ecosystems that support life. In addition to this, the livelihoods of traditional populations living in the area are also at risk. It is important to identify the igapó forests before these interventions, in a situation of natural river flow, so that the proportion of the impact of the installation of the dam might be understood and, from there, to execute effective mitigation strategies. To identify natural flooded forests from the Volta Grande do Xingu area, this work proposes to map the igapós using Remote Sensors known as Synthetic Aperture Radars.
