Popis: | This chapter provides an analysis of The Hate You Give through the lens of Robert Stepto’s concept of “ritual ground,” and W.E.B. DuBois’s “double consciousness.” Ritual grounds are described as Afro-American spatial configurations that are responses to social structure, such as the barbershop or community center. Double consciousness describes the experience of living in the United States as an African American; a feeling of “twoness” as an American and an African American. The chapter applies these concepts to a discussion of how the protagonist navigates the spaces of the narrative to find her voice and agency, not unlike her real-life counterparts who mobilize, protest and use their voices to push for social and political change. |
