Popis: | Four cases of acute colitis related to the recent use of penicillin-type antibiotics are presented. All four cases exhibited spasm and oedema of the colon which was predominantly right-sided and which did not appear to be associated with severe ulceration. The entity is characterised by the rapid onset of bloody diarrhoea and abdominal pain, and rapid recovery when the drug therapy ceases. Its onset may mimic an acute abdominal disorder and an immediate barium enema can quickly establish the diagnosis. |
