Popis: | The aim of this work is to estimate the association of energy expenditure during leisure time and the prevalence of overweight and obesity in a representative sample of the adult Spanish population. Professional interviewers administered standardized in-home questionnaires to 1000 Spanish adults aged 15 years upwards, selected by a multi-stage stratified cluster sampling with quotas applied to ensure national representativeness. Energy expenditure during leisure-time was calculated based on data on frequency and amount of time participating in various physical activities, assigning metabolic equivalents (METS) to each activity. Multiple linear regression models with BMI as the dependent variable were fitted. The results show significant independent associations of leisure-time physical activity with overweight and obesity both for men and women. The regression model predictes that each 10 METS-hour/wk increase in lesiure-time physical activity is significantly associated with having -0.2 kg/m2 lower BMI among men and -0.3 kg/m2 lower BMI among women. However, we do not find any association between work-time physical activity and lower BMI. |
