Popis: The importance of calcium ions as an effector for the regulation of cellular functions has received widespread attention in recent years. The intracellular Ca2+ concentraticn in resting neutrophiIs is maintained at submicromolar level by a plasma membrane-bound CaZf ATPase pump and some Ca2’-binding mechanisms. Many studies indicate that the intracelIuIar free Ca2+ level rises in stimulated neutrophils due to mobilization of ions from the intracellular calcium pool or their influx from the extracellular medium through the plasma membrane 111. This increment may induce cell responses directIy or indirectly. A new experimental approach for the permeabilization of cells by applying high voltage pulses of an external electric field (electro?ermeabiIization) may be used to inject various substances (e.g. calcium ions) into the celIs [2]. Our paper is devoted to the analysis of the role of Ca2+ in the signal transduction mechanism of human neutrophil activation using this method.
