Popis: The detection of pregnancy, or its absence, in domestic species is important in a number of respects, but particularly in relation to their husbandry. In polyoestrous species (cattle, horse, pigs, sheep and goats), early and accurate detection of the non-pregnant individual is important because it enables early rebreeding. In recent years, many new biochemical markers of pregnancy have been identified, and although they can be very accurate, often they can only be detected in a laboratory using expensive equipment and by skilled scientists. Particularly in farm animal production systems, it is important that a positive or negative diagnosis is made at the time the animal is being examined. The sensitivity of a diagnostic method refers to the correctness of identifying pregnant animals, whereas specificity refers to the correctness of identifying non-pregnant animals. However, it is important that inexperienced veterinarians should select a time when they are confident of their accuracy in making the diagnosis, irrespective of the method used.
