In Western countries female genitals and their functions have both negative and positive associations, and are often objects of mystery and taboo. These culturally controlled aspects are important ingredients of a frame of reference concerning genitals and their funtions. The patient brings this frame of reference with her when she visits a gynaecologist. The gynaecologist, however, tends to a medical framework. The meeting between patient and gynaecologist may therefore be marked by a confrontation of these two, mostly contradictory, frames of reference. Therefore it is of great importance that physicians be aware of this aspect of the meeting, to be able to handle the delicate situation in an adequate way. |
