Effect of Local Cold Application Prior to Venipuncture on Pain Related Response among Children in Selected Hospital Burdwan, West Bengal

Popis: A quasi–experimental study was undertaken to determine the effect of local cold application prior to venipuncture on pain-related responses among children. The conceptual framework adopted for the study was based on system model. Purposive sampling was used to select 50 children from Burdwan Medical College and Hospital, Burdwan. The tool used were interview schedule for background data, physiologic measurement for assessment of physiologic pain response, two standardized pain scale (CHEOPS and Oucher) for assessment of behavioral and subjective pain assessment. From the present study the result showed no significant difference between two groups (experimental and control) for physiologic responses however behavioral response (‘t’ df (48) = 2.01,p* < .05) and subjective response (‘t’ df (48) = 2.01,p* < .05) were more in the control group than in the experimental group. So, result of the study suggest that the use of local cold application prior to venipuncture can be considered an easy and effective intervention of reducing venipuncture related pain. The study has implication in the field of nursing practice, nursing education and nursing administration. Based on the study findings the recommendation was made for a comparative study on a large sample in different setting.
