Gender inequalities worldwide manifest in many aspects of education, including access, retention, and career choices. Female teachers provide an important solution to ensuring equal access to learning opportunities for girls and boys. They can disseminate a culture of gender balance through education not just in the classrooms but in local communities. Female teachers have the potential to transform this situation. Without sufficient training and support, female teachers are also likely to uphold negative or harmful social norms and gender stereotypes. Putting equal numbers of men and women at the front of the classroom has value, in terms of positive gender role models and equality of opportunity in employment. Still, it should be supported by other gender-sensitive initiatives, including pedagogical training. Women remain under-represented, particularly at higher levels, in education leadership and decision-making positions, and more research on gender and educational leadership is needed to understand these dynamics and their implications for schools. This paper will highlight the status of female teachers in the Jammu district, the participation and development of female teachers at the senior secondary level, and the perception of teachers about their girl students in the selection of stream of subjects. |
