Popis: | Governmental units are fiscally responsible for their expenditures. To ensure their responsibility is fulfilled, there must be administrative control procedures and reviews of expenditures. Expenditures for drugs are no exception. In studying the various control procedures either used or advocated, one learns there is considerable sentiment to have drugs dispensed through hospitals. The main objective of this course of action ostensibly is to realize monetary savings on programs which supply prescribed medication. Little data are presented on the extent of slavings available from such programs. Accordingly, this area was selected for examination and the costs of providing prescribed drugs to outpatients through two large government hospitals was determined and compared with the costs incurred by a county in providing pharmaceutical services through a vendor program. The isolation of the dispensing function in hospitals is fairly straightforward and yields reasonably accurate costs when cost-finding procedures are used. This enables the governmental unit to determine the monetary cost of dispensing medication. Adding the computed dispensing cost to the cost of the medication dispensed gives an estimate of the total monetary cost incurred. |
