Popis: | This chapter examines the informal livelihoods of street workers in Hanoi, Vietnam, during the COVID-19 crisis. It highlights the initiatives they employed to generate income and provide affordable food and critical services to other low-income families. Lockdown measures have been harshly affecting the informal sectors, yet street vendors have demonstrated their resilience, ability to self-sustain and critical roles to the community. Through examining local reports and interviews with street workers, this chapter sheds light on the survival strategies of poor citizens and reveals the diversity of their initiatives ranging from embracing grassroots self-managed organisations, employing information technologies and social media, shifting to mobile trading, and self-enforcing hygiene and spatial distancing. |
