Popis: This chapter tracks the overwhelming cultural effects of Jessie Redmon Fauset as the managing editor of The Brownies’ Book. It maintains that Fauset used her considerable social and political influence to navigate that “blind maze of thought” to which Fauset alludes in her appraisal of her mentor W.E.B. Du Bois’s work. The resultant publication engendered social, political, educational, and cultural dialogues for and about Black children during one of the nation’s most memorable literary movements. This chapter is particularly interested in how the conceptualization of The Brownies’ Book captivated and empowered Black youth of the 1920s. It argues that Fauset’s influence as contributor and literary and managing editor of this important Black children’s periodical gave its young readership the necessary tools to nurture a collective sense of belonging and to theorize their young and emerging Black identities, therefore, providing them with critical strategies to navigate a nation in racial turmoil.
