Popis: | Patient Family Advisory Councils (PFACs) are an effective method for healthcare organizations to improve quality patient care outcomes, access, and community engagement through patient volunteer involvement and engagement. The volunteer patient family advisor (PFA) provides an experienced customer-focused lens at an organizational level in the decision-making processes from hospital committees to the executive board room. PFAs can partake in the co-design and development of healthcare initiatives and evaluate current practices, services, and satisfaction (Missel et al., 2020). A program evaluation was conducted to measure the impact of a bilingual PFAC through patient family engagement (PFE) and other metrics that assess meaningful change in the healthcare system. The evaluation was conducted through qualitative and quantitative tools that measured and evaluated the value and impact of the PFAC in a healthcare system. The program evaluation was guided by the Logic Model. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected via anonymous surveys at four-month intervals addressing PFAs, staff committee members, and leadership partners (LPs). The LPs survey focused on leaders’ satisfaction with presenting and co-designing projects at the PFAC meetings with a focus on the value and outcomes of the project discussions, proposed intervention ideas, and ability to implement ideas within the organization. Outcome data were compiled and validated by the patient and staff PFAC co-chairs. The PFAC outcomes evaluation reflected an accomplished 19 quality improvement projects with outcome data, various PFAC hospital committee memberships, and focused ad hoc projects over a two-year period despite the challenges imposed by both staffing and COVID-19. The survey data suggested high PFA satisfaction with organizational involvement, level of projects, equity in language services, feeling valued, and comfort with providing input during project meetings. PFAs satisfaction scores ranged from 4.6 to 5 on a Likert scale of 1-5. The LP survey results reflected that they highly valued PFA interventions and ideas that were defined as realistic, cost-effective, and innovative. LPs indicated (score five on a five-point Likert scale) that they certainly would recommend that all councils and departments utilize the PFAC for QI projects, access, and patient care delivery improvement by co-design. Limitations during the program evaluation period included the COVID-19 restrictions of in-person outreach and recruitment, which led to utilizing an all-online platform meeting forum and reallocation of PFAC staff members during COVID surge periods. |
