Religion has been at the centre of tradition that has been followed for a long time in Tamil Culture. Saivam and Vaishnavism are two religions which have been practised since ancient times in Tamil Nadu. Due to the passage of time many religions spread in Tamil Nadu and degraded the status of the Vedic and Vaishnava religions. During the Pallava period, Nayanmars and Alvars defended, contributed and developed the Vedic and Vaishnava religions. Perasiriyar Subbu Reddiar belongs to the Saivam sect, he is well-versed in Saiva Sithandham and Thirumurai. He has written many texts explaining many of the messages implied in this literature for the easy understanding of the common people. Although he belonged to the Saivam religion, he was interested in Vaishnavism for which he produced Vaishnavaite Puranas and epics (Ithihasangal) in simple Tamil and added pride to the Tamil language. He visited the holy shrines of Vaishnavism and also sang the specialities of each verse with his songs, dividing the verses region-wise in the way it is said in ancient times. Through this, he has further developed both the religions of Saivism and Vaishnavism. Thus, Professor has made personal pride not only for religions but also for the Tamil Language. Professor Subbu Reddiar has written more religious texts and has learned through Tamil literature. Hence, the purpose of this study is to establish the religious contributions of Professor Subbu Reddiar. |
