Perinatal mortality though on the decline is still alarmingly high in India. When associated with an abnormal presentation it is higher still. In our hospital, i.e. the B.Y.L., Nair Hospital and the Kamathipura Municipal Hospital, we have observed that out of about 3,000 normal deliveries that we have yearly, in approximately 4–5% of them there is an abnormal presentation. The perinatal mortality has fallen from around 200 in 1981 to 139 in 1984. It has been observed that 18% of this figure comes from deaths associated with an abnormal presentation. Hence the thorough monitoring of the patients to detect and treat these abnormal presentations adequately will go a long way to reduce the perinatal mortality. |
